In case you didn't read the comments for my last France Gall post, I've promised a whole week of France stuff when I reach 5000 hits, which looks like it will be pretty soon. To get you in the mood, I'm posting Brit teen singer Twinkle's cover of 'Poupée De Cire, Poupée De Son', reinterpreted as 'A Lonely Singing Doll'. (I have a stack of covers of France songs, but France Gall Week will be 7 days of pure France).
You may have heard Twinkle's song 'Terry' (1964) on bubblegum machine (which is now updated, yay). Written by Twinkle herself when she was just 15, it was banned by the BBC for being in poor taste (the lyrics tell a Shangri-La's style tale of her love for a tragic biker boy) - which may have helped it to reach the #4 spot in the UK charts. Morrissey is apparently quite a fan, and the Smiths covered her only charting song (it reached #21) 'Golden Lights' in 1986.
I don't know who is responsible for the lyrics on 'A Lonely Singing Doll' - if you can help me out, please leave a comment or email me. Seeing as it was released the same year as 'Poupée...', I'm guessing it must have been an attempt to cash in on the original's continental success, but I'd be interested to know if it was maybe Twinkle herself paying tribute to a song she loved. I have a cover of this cover by a now defunct Melbourne band Sleepy Township, which is fantastic and might make an appearance here soon.
