Nothing can top France Gall week of course and, in general, I think French pop has somewhat ruined me for most other music. Well, not entirely, but because so much of it meets a musical aesthetic that is perfect to my ears, it means I'm not going to waste much time on other music that doesn't share some of those qualities - amazing vocal hooks and gorgeous melodies, driven by a good dose of passion. I did loosely define this as a pop music blog when I started, but if I didn't make it clear what I meant by pop, that's it - the hookiness and the strong, well-structured melodies. On most Sundays, I do veer from that with more jazzy and downtempo tracks.

OK whatever, here's today's music:

Ze Malibu Kids - Your Bed (2000)

I like to think that in an alternate reality, the McDonald brothers are pop superstars who dominate the charts. But unfortunately, in this reality, not only is this not the case, but Stylus magazine gave their Ze Malibu Kids album Sound It Out a very undeserving D-. I will restrain myself from a rant against the indie music press for now - instead just listen to the all-out guitar pop spectacular that is their cover of Cub's 'Your Bed'.

The photo is from my own photo album, from a Redd Kross show here in Australia (Gold Coast) in 1993.

Cub - Your Bed (1994)

The original from Cub is brilliant too, though much more twee pop and stripped back.

Oh, and this is my new category [now a tag, renamed double take] where I give you two versions of the same song.

Some links: Redd Kross (check out the Video Rarities, where you can watch a video of another of their lovely songs); Cub fansite [Moved here]; Mint Records (some Cub videos); Lisa Marr (formerly of Cub)

i totally agree with your comment about French pop music! nothing's worth listening to if it doesn't have a good melody. thanks for the France Gall week!
