If you feel your life is lacking in Swedish electro twee with dirty lyrics, then I highly recommend The Adventures Of Strip Squad. The debut album from Strip Squad shows off their knack for creating endearingly candid, witty, and quirky lyrics, with catchy tunes to boot. There's a quality I like in pop where the lyrics are 'generous' in that the listener is let in on a fair bit of the story, rather than being too cryptic or too symbolic. It makes it fun and a somewhat salacious experience, like hearing good gossip.
I'm also always on the lookout for good pop on all different themes that perfectly encapsulate a mood, moment or experience. I'm reminded of this quote from Sophie Ellis Bextor when I think of what I look for in pop music:
Pop is about summing up, in little portions, what it is to be alive. It's about trying to communicate what it is to be human.
A great deal of pop doesn't do this successfully when it comes to more overt sex-themed songs. Strip Squad make me wish there were more executed as naturally as theirs.
You can download most tracks and buy the album (for just 7€, including postage) from the Strip Squad website. I bought my copy locally from Book Club Records - for my one or maybe two Australian readers.
From Strip Squad's bio:
We believe that popular culture needs a seriousness towards frivolousness and vice versa. This is something that we try to incorporate into our music, even though we usually fail miserably.
Not true at all!
