Linda Yamamoto Linda Yamamoto
Linda Yamamoto - Dounimo Tomaranai (1972)

Teenage Japanese model Linda Yamamoto released her debut single 'Komacchauna' in 1966 to enormous success, selling over 1 million copies. Her subsequent attempts at a hit single flopped, until her comeback in 1972 with 'Dounimo Tomaranai'. (She recorded a new version of this song used as the closing theme for the anime series Legendz, which was released this year as a single, but it's not a patch on this original). Linda's phenomenonal modelling success, which was significantly furthered by her musical fame, led to her being known as the 'Japanese Twiggy' (not very imaginative really). She was known for her midriff-revealing stage outfits, which caused outrage at the time.

I'd love to hear more Linda Yamamoto - if you have any you want to share with me, you'll make me very happy! Also if you can help with any more buying links, please let me know.

Pretty cool. I like the tribal percussion, the swirling violins and the brassy horn section -- quite a production. Too bad there isn't a compilation series like Ultra Chicks or Femmes de Paris for female Japanese artists from the 60s and 70s. I'd buy it!

Good news is that there is a Japanese beat girls compilation in the works, being compiled by Sheila of ChaChaCharming. I read so here: http://www.pliink.com/mt/marxy/archives/000513.html

Yes, that is good news! I've always been a secret admirer of Sheila and her wonderful site. I wish she could post mp3s of the obscure j-pop songs she raves about, so perhaps this upcoming compilation will be our chance to hear what all the fuss is about. Keep us updated!

Yes she seems ultra-fab and I always wish for mp3s on her site too! I have tried to chase up some of her recommendations, and have found a couple more tracks of the earlier Japanese stuff. I'll post them soon.
